You are invited to a Vespers Fellowship, and Book Study at Living Peace Church of the Brethren

Turning the world upside down doesn't happen all at once, but you can make a start by joining the Living Peace Church of the Brethren, a new fellowship in Sioux City, for a short vesper service and book study each Sunday at 5 PM. The meetings will take place at 1319 W 5th Street in Sioux City.

The hour-long program will include the short prayer service followed by a study of "The Powers That Be: Theology for a New Millennium" by noted author Walter Wink. Wink challenges the notion that corporate and political powers should be the ones setting the agenda for a modern society, and invites readers to recognize that many people mindlessly subscribe to the empty spirituality of the world as they find it, rather than mining scripture and experience for the true spirituality that brings shape, meaning, and salvation to believers.

The book is available through amazon.com or through Lucinda Douglas, who can be contacted at (712) 252-9630. Douglas leads the sessions, which take place at the Whitfield United Methodist Church, which is located blocks west of the intersection of Hamilton Blvd and West 4th Street, then over another block on West 5th Street. All are warmly welcomed to attend.

Attend Vespers Service

Exciting things are taking place at the Living Peace Church of the Brethren!

We are involved in a couple of those right now!

One is our weekly 5 p.m. Sunday Vespers Service. During our service, we are exploring the book The Powers That Be by Dr. Walter Wink, a noted theologian.

Plan to attend one of our Vespers and Book Study services, and bring a friend along.

Coming soon, I will be making a presentation to the Whitfield United Methodist Church. Final details of that are being worked out, and an announcement about that will be forthcoming.

Immigration Clinic

Immigration clinic will be held at Whitfield United Methodist Church, 1319 West 5th St. on Sunday, March 25th at 3:30 P.M.  If you would like to help at the clinic, get in touch with Glenda or Gene Hill at (712)276-2688, or show up. We can always use Spanish interpreters.

More Immigration News

There still is no comprehensive immigration reform bill in the House or the Senate. The Senate needs 60 votes. If there are fewer than 60 votes, the bill can be killed by a filibuster or threat of a filibuster by any one Senator or group of Senators. Democrats control the Senate by one vote, but there are some Democrats that will oppose comprehensive immigration reform. That means there must be significant support from around 15 to 20 Republicans. The Principles for Comprehensive Immigration Reform can be found at this Web site: Go to website

An except from a letter written to President Bush and Members of Congress:

".... let us never forget that the immigration reform debate is about real people. Undocumented immigrants live in our communities, have loving families, work hard, pay taxes, and believe deeply in the American Dream. They bus tables, clean buildings, cook food, care for children, tend gardens, tend the elderly, construct houses, clean hotel rooms, pick crops, produce food, and so much more. They have voted with their feet to be here. Many have risked their lives in the process of getting here.  And far too many have died horrible deaths in the desert seeking only a better life for their families."

The other thing to know is that fees are vastly increasing. Immigration will become much harder because of the increase in the fees for a green card, for filling paperwork and so forth.
